Supporting Cultural Connection Through Design
As an active member of the Japan America Society of Rhode Island (JASRI), I contribute to the organization’s social media, website, and visual communications. JASRI is a nonprofit focused on strengthening cultural connections between Japan and the Rhode Island community through events, education, and shared experiences.
My role is ongoing and multifaceted, involving everything from event promotion and photography to website updates and social media management. Rather than working on a single campaign, I help maintain and evolve JASRI’s overall digital presence, ensuring that their events and initiatives are consistently communicated in a clear, engaging, and visually cohesive way.
The Problem
As a community-based nonprofit, JASRI hosts a variety of events throughout the year, ranging from cultural festivals to fundraisers. However, maintaining a consistent and engaging digital presence across platforms can be challenging, especially with frequently changing event information.
Key challenges included:
Keeping the website updated with accurate, timely information
Promoting multiple events with different audiences and tones
Maintaining a consistent visual identity across platforms
Capturing events in a way that reflects their cultural significance and energy
Encouraging community engagement and event attendance
My Approach
I approached this role as a combination of content creation, brand consistency, and community storytelling.
Because this is an ongoing position, consistency was just as important as creativity. Each post, update, or design needed to feel like part of a larger system while still adapting to different events and audiences.
My approach included:
Maintaining a consistent visual style across social media and web updates
Creating graphics that clearly communicate event details and encourage attendance
Regularly updating the website to keep information current and accessible
Documenting events through photography to build a visual archive
Moderating social platforms to support engagement and communication
This allowed me to help shape not just individual posts, but the overall voice and presence of the organization online.
Development Process
My contributions span across recurring responsibilities tied to JASRI’s events and communications throughout the year.
Event Photography
I photographed several major events, including the Black Ships Festival, Sushi & Sake Sail, and JASRI’s participation in the Bristol Fourth of July Parade. My focus was on capturing:
Cultural elements and traditions
Candid moments of community interaction
Event atmosphere and participation
These images are used for future promotion, social media, and archival purposes.
Website Management (Weekly Updates)
I regularly update JASRI’s website with new event information, ensuring that dates, details, and registration information are accurate and easy to navigate. This required:
Clear information hierarchy
Consistent formatting across pages
Timely updates aligned with event schedules
Social Media Management & Moderation
I help manage JASRI’s social media platforms by posting event promotions, sharing updates, and monitoring engagement. This includes:
Scheduling and publishing posts
Responding to interactions when needed
Maintaining a consistent tone and visual style
Event Promotion Graphics
I design graphics to promote events, fundraisers, and schedules across social media and digital platforms. These designs focus on:
Clear communication of key details
Visual consistency with JASRI’s identity
Engaging layouts that encourage attendance
Invitation Design (RSVP + Gala)
I created RSVP save-the-dates and formal invitations for JASRI events, balancing clarity with a more elevated and polished visual style appropriate for formal gatherings.

Results

This work contributed to:
More consistent and up-to-date online communication
Increased visibility for events and initiatives
A growing visual archive of community experiences
Stronger alignment between website, social media, and event materials
Reflection & Next Steps
This role has been especially valuable in developing my ability to manage design work over time, rather than just within a single project. It required balancing consistency, adaptability, and responsiveness to ongoing needs.
One of the biggest takeaways was learning how to design within a living system, where content is constantly evolving and requires regular updates and attention.
If I were to expand on this work, I would explore:
Developing a more formalized brand or social media style guide
Expanding content formats (such as video or reels)
Creating more structured campaign strategies for larger events
Overall, this experience reinforced my interest in long-term design systems, community-focused storytelling, and digital content strategy.
