Embracing the Unordinary: Creating a Title Sequence for "Two-Headed Calf"
For my Motion Graphics II assignment, I was tasked with creating a unique title sequence. After exploring previous student work for inspiration, I noticed that some had chosen to animate simple songs or poems. This led me to focus on one of my favorite poems, Two-Headed Calf by Laura Gilpin. The poem's themes of living life to the fullest and embracing individuality in a world that often emphasizes conformity resonated with me, making it the perfect choice for my project.

Inspiration and Research
Interestingly, I first discovered this poem through an artist I follow named Adam Ellis. Seeing his work introduced me to Gilpin's powerful poem, and I knew it would translate well into a motion graphic piece. I then researched various visual styles and design concepts that aligned with the poem's tone. Key inspirations included:
Color Schemes: Inspired by the soft shades of early evening and early sunrise, I developed a palette that blended warm and cool tones.
Environmental Design: For the grassy landscape depicted in the poem, I referenced the calming colors of grass at night.
Typography: I explored children’s book-style fonts to evoke a sense of innocence and warmth.
Process and Development
The production process involved intricate timing work, where I carefully aligned each composition to flow seamlessly with the poem's pacing.
Timing Process Image: This visual outlines the layered steps I took to synchronize each element's motion with the poem's narration.
Design Process Image: This captures the stages involved in creating the drawn aspects of the title sequence, emphasizing the attention to detail that shaped the final visual aesthetic.
Final Outcome
The completed title sequence reflects the thoughtful integration of color, typography, and animation that I created for this piece. The final piece combines warm visuals with emotive movement, effectively conveying the poem's message of acceptance and cherishing each moment.
Conclusion
This project challenged me to develop my timing, design, and motion graphics skills. By embracing the poem's deeper meaning, I was able to create a compelling visual narrative that stays true to the emotional weight of Two-Headed Calf. This experience not only improved my technical abilities but also deepened my appreciation for the power of combining text and visuals to tell a meaningful story.
